Simulating the variability and scale effect for slow crack growth in Hi-Nicalon SiC-based tows: A parametric study

The delayed failure time of SiC-based multifilament tows under static fatigue condition is as broadly scattered for individual filaments, despite it commonly used strong scatter reduction. Moreover, the stress exponent (n) hierarchy-dependent revealed by a Monte-Carlo algorithm: decreasing from filament (micro) scale to tow (meso) scale. This demonstrated originate mismatch between applied critical (affecting growth kinetics), variable because fiber misalignment in tow, and its tow-averaged value endurance diagram construction. In context this algorithm, shown that n would evolve with parallelism, range or rank whereas strength distribution plays secondary role. structure shall therefore be considered major parameter composite part design aiming long service life.
